Preparations and Prerequisites for the Rites of the Holy Days of Babalon

Part 1: Preparation of the Altar to BabalonHoly Days of Babalon Altar

Babalon’s Altar is placed in the West, as opposed to Her Brother’s Altar, that of Ra Hoor Khuit, which is placed in the East. However Ra Hoor Khuit’s Altar is not required and is optional for this ritual. Customarily, altars are covered with a cloth, with colors corresponding to the deity which the altar is for. Babalon’s colors are typically blue, or blue and gold, with black or a field of stars underneath. The blue is a special deep lapis blue, which is the color of Her energy when She appears. It is “A lambent flame of blue” as it says in Liber AL I, 26. It is almost neon, and unmistakable. The Gold is because She is a Daughter of Ra, by Nuit, and sister of Ra Hoor Khuit. She is the Blue Woman clothed in the Sun.

“The sigil of devotion. Be it consecrated, be it true, be it daily affirmed. I am not scorned. Thy love is to me. Procure a disk of copper, in diameter three inches paint thereon the field blue the star gold of me, BABALON.”

-Liber 49, v. 21

Items needed:

  • Candles: either 3 lapis blue or midnight blue, or ideally 2 blue and one gold
  • 1 censer for charcoal incense
  • 1 offering bowl, chalice or cup
  • Fresh Rainwater or Wine for the Chalice
  • Cakes of Life (optional)
  • Ritual bell or gong (optional)

When facing the altar, place the two blue candles at the back of the altar, one in each corner. Place the final blue or gold candle at the front, middle of the altar. The three candles should in this way make an equilateral triangle. Place a censer for incense in the middle-back of the triangle. Place the offering cup or offering bowl in the center of the triangle. This is the minimum arrangement for the Babalon Altar. If you have made the Sigillum Divinorum as described in Mystery Babalon, then you may place it within the center of the Triangle. If you have made the Sigil of Devotion as described in Liber 49, then that can be placed within the triangle as well, on top of the Sigillum Divinorum. The Chalice may then be set upon the Sigillum Divinorum. Set the Rainwater (or Wine) and the Cakes of Life (optional) to the side of the Altar for now. They will be used later in the Rite. The ritual bell or gong (optional) should set somewhere outside of the triangle in a convenient location for use, later.

Additional items depending on which Holy Day:

Saturn: You may include any Emblems of Death which you feel appropriate, such as skulls, bones, tokens from the dead and venerable objects in either pure white or pure black.

Jupiter: If you have items of Bounty from your life, your garden, or nature around you (such as harvested food, wreaths, or other celebrations of fullness or dominion) then these may be added to the altar as well. Images of a cornucopia, Her Wheel of Seven Spokes, or Her Enthroned are also appropriate.

Mars: If you have items which represent war and necessity of purpose, such as a sword, knife or dagger you may include them upon the Altar.

The Sun: If you have items which represent ecstasy and life (such as lions, suns, objects of gold, crowns, scepters, luscious fruits and berries, images of strong ruling women who are sensuous and royal) you may include them upon the Altar.

Venus: If you have items which represent love and lust such as roses, love philters, tokens of affection and desire, or sumptuous candies or chocolates you may include them upon the Altar as well.

Mercury: If you have items which represent the crossroads, such as serpents entwined, thresholds, doorways, or the like, you may include them upon the Altar, as well as any first fruits of Spring available to you in your area.

The Moon: For the Holy Day of the Moon, you may include images of serpents and moons, moon phases, eclipses or imagery of bull horns and uterus as in the ancient way of depicting them.

Part 2 – Preparations for the ritual

To begin, make sure that Her Altar is properly arranged in the West. You will need Thelemic Abramelin Incense for this ritual, as well as Abramelin Oil. Then, prepare yourself with patient care and dedicated purpose. Bath ritually, adorn yourself appropriately, and then proceed to your Shrine or sacred space around Noontime.

Begin with silent meditation in the West before Her Altar, to calm and prepare yourself for the ritual. When this has been accomplished to your satisfaction, perform the Grounding Ritual (see below). After this, light the candles upon Her Altar, with the words “In Nomine Babalon” said as each candle is lit. Ignite your charcoal and add Abramelin Incense to it when the charcoal is ready. Pour the Rainwater or Wine into your Chalice with the words “In Nomine Babalon” and move the Cakes of Life (optional) near the Chalice, so that they may both be infused with the energy of the Rite which follows. Then perform a Banishing Ritual (LBRP, Star Ruby, Gaia-Luna Point of Light or Stella Heru). Next, perform the Opening of the Four Gates to the One Palace. This is accomplished by performing the full version of the Adorations of Ra Hoor Khuit to all four quarters in succession.

Part 3 – Dedication of yourself as a Devotee of Babalon (optional)

This step is optional, and is for those who wish to reaffirm their commitment and devotion to the Great Liberating Mother in their lives. If there are many people present for the Rite, you may perform this section individually or as a group, as your Will may guide you.

Advance to the Altar of Babalon in the West. Add more Abramelin Incense to the charcoal, if necessary. Take the Oil of Abramelin and anoint your third eye with a small amount on your finger, saying “In Nomine Babalon”, and again over your heart saying ‘et Vox Sanctae Meretricis”. Breath deep to calm yourself, and then begin reciting aloud the Sevenfold Adoration of Babalon, and then the Grand Devotion of Babalon. Speak it slowly, and with the full focus of your Will on each and every word. In your heart, feel the yearning for Her presence with all of your being. Open yourself and your Shrine or Sacred Space to Her presence, as you invite Her in. Use your Waters fully when reciting these Adorations.

The Sevenfold Adoration of Babalon

Strike the bell seven times in total, once at the beginning of each Adoration.

[Luna]
O Great Babalon!
It is You who is the ever-changing one.
It is You who moves through time as the Great Serpent,
Weaving magick in the Great Body of space.
Born from the Great Mother Nu,
Veiled by Her Night Sky,
Adorned with a crown of Stars,
Kissed by the Flame of your Father Star, Ra.

[Mercurius]
O Great Gateway!
It is You who opens the way to the Underworld.
It is You who bears the Torch that leads to the great Abyss,
And the demon there who is leashed in Your Service.
Your Wisdom loosens the fetters
And chains which bind the Will!
Your Truth shatters the veils
And brings ecstasy to the Spirits of Your Devotees.

[Venus]
O Great Passion!
It is You who bears the crown of Seven Rays.
It is You who traverses the Celestial Waters of Sky,
Opening the way to all the Realms.
Seven are Your Principles,
Seven are Your Veils,
And Seven are the Realms,
Shining high above Earth and Underworld.

[Sol]
O Great Fomenter!
It is You who uplifts all in splendorous light,
It is You whose shines across the high-arching Heavens,
Fearless and wise Daughter of the Sun.
Your enemies cower in fear,
Your minions find their courage,
And enjoin the battle anew,
Ensuring bliss of life for all who are worthy.

[Mars]
O Great Warrior!
It is You who bears the Sword of vengeance,
It is You who stands upon the mightiest of all the Beasts,
Mightier than all the gods of men and their fools.
Severed heads lay at your feet,
Glowing stars in the night sky,
Dead denizens of the fish-god,
Trampled in the fierce lust of Your Wrath.

[Iuppiter]
O Great Liberator!
It is You who bears the Scepter of the Ages
It is You who rides through the Aeons in Your Chariot
Pulled by the great Lion-beasts of men.
Shining with the Bounty of Fortuna,
Leaving ecstasy in Your wake,
Bearing the Wheel tightly gripped,
You emanate the Principles of Your Dominion.

[Saturnus]
O Great Death!
It is You who stands at the threshold.
It is You who embraces all and refuses none,
Bearing Jasmine and Rose, the Emblems of Death
Your Whoredom is the essence
Of Death’s renewal and release,
Turned to stone by your sweet kiss,
Your face painted with the ash of all you have taken.

In Nomine Babalon et Vox Sanctae Meretricis

The Grand Devotion of Babalon

Strike the bell one time.

I come before thee, all that is of the deepest depths of existence.
Guardian of the Seven Great Principles, held within Your wheel,
Goddess of Heka, laid before the people within the Mysteries of Blackness
Seen as Golden by Your true seekers,
I give myself, and all that I am, to You,
Great Babalon!

I lay before You, all that is within me.
I harness my animal, as You ride the Great Beast
So that I might serve you, with my Spirit,
O Great Goddess of the Gateway of Death, of Life,
And of all that is brought forth from the mysteries beyond knowing.

You, who are the Goddess of War and of Vengeance,
Great Daughter of Ra,
Whose Secret Name at last I knoweth,
O, mighty Hoor-Pahkhet, whose reign rose from the sands upon the Nile,
Whose reign was born from the people who lived before time.

I come to you, mighty Babalon.
Take me for Your own!
I exist to serve You,
with all of my passion,
my heart, my soul.
My devotion is Yours. My breath is for You.
I ask You to take me, and make me that which you Desire,
For Your Desire is Wisdom,
And Your Heart beats for All.
